At the heart of our reading tutoring lies the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a time-tested and evidence-based method that has transformed the way we teach reading. This approach is distinctive because it is:
• Personalized and Student-Centered: Tailored specifically to each student’s needs, abilities, and learning style, ensuring a unique and effective learning experience.
• Multisensory: Integrates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning pathways, making reading a more engaging and holistic process.
• Structured, Sequential, and Cumulative: Lessons build upon each other in a logical sequence, reinforcing previous learning and promoting a deeper understanding of reading concepts.
• Emotionally Sound: Recognizes and addresses the emotional aspects of learning to read, creating a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment for students.
• Cognitive: Focuses on understanding the ‘why’ behind reading concepts, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Whether you’re struggling with dyslexia or other reading challenges, the Orton-Gillingham Approach is a beacon of hope, guiding you towards reading success with its structured, yet flexible, student-focused methodology.
In our journey to master grammar, we use the engaging method of sentence diagramming. This approach is not just effective but also enjoyable, as it involves:
• Visual Learning: Sentence diagramming turns grammar into a visual journey. It breaks down sentences into their basic elements, illustrating the structure and showing how different parts connect. This visual aspect is especially beneficial for students who grasp concepts better through images and spatial understanding.
• Interactive Grammar Exploration: It’s not just about seeing; it’s about doing. By diagramming sentences, students actively engage with grammar, understanding parts of speech and sentence construction. This method brings an element of play, turning grammar lessons into a hands-on experience.
• Deep Comprehension: Through diagramming, students gain a more profound and intuitive understanding of grammar and syntax. This foundational knowledge strengthens their writing and communication skills, laying the groundwork for academic and personal success.
• Catering to Diverse Learning Styles: Whether a student is a visual or kinesthetic learner, sentence diagramming caters to different learning preferences. It allows students to physically map out sentences, fostering a tactile connection with language and its structure.
Dyslexia presents a unique way of processing language, often misunderstood and overlooked. Here’s how it manifests and challenges conventional reading methods:
• Right Brain vs. Left Brain: Unlike the common left-brain approach of sounding out words, dyslexic individuals tend to utilize the right side of their brain. They often perceive words as images or pictures, which can lead to unique challenges in reading and comprehension.
• Visual Experience of Dyslexia: Some individuals with dyslexia might experience letters appearing inverted or floating on the page. This perception is not obvious to them, as their brains naturally compensate by enhancing visual memory in the right hemisphere.
• The Challenge of Explanation: Conveying the experience of dyslexia is akin to describing color to someone who has never seen it. It’s a complex condition that varies in manifestation and intensity.
